Switch JAWS Eloquence to British accent speech
Problem
You wish to have Eloquence speak with a British accent rather than US accent.
Resolution
Method 1: Using the keyboard
JAWS users can use the following steps themselves to affect the change:
- Press JAWSKey+J or ALT+TAB to switch to the JAWS window if available.
- Then ALT+O for “Options” and press ENTER key to access the sub menu.
- Use the up/down arrows to select “Voices” and then press ENTER.
- Then press up/down arrows to select “Voice Adjustment” and press ENTER.
- In the Voice Adjustment dialogue press TAB key until you reach the option X.
- Then press ALT+DOWN arrow to open the drop down box.
- Then use arrow keys to select “English – United Kingdom” and then press TAB and press spacebar on the “Set language as primary” button.
- Then press TAB to reach the “Save as” button and press SPACEBAR to activate it.
- Press ENTER to accept the existing profile (unless you wish to rename it).
- You may be prompted to confirm to overwrite the existing profile, tab to “Yes” button and press spacebar on it.
- You may then be asked whether to set as the default profile, choose “Yes” here also.
- On some systems you may then be asked to authenticate, if so choose “Yes” or “Ctontinue” button to complete the changes.
Method 2: Using the mouse
This method can be used by sighted helpers or technicians in a managed environment.
- Do one fo the following depending on how JAWS is configured:
- Click the taskbar button to bring up the JAWS window.
- Right click the JAWS system tray icon to open the context menu.
- Then choose Options > Voices > Voice adjustment.
- Click “Synthesizer language” drop down and choose “English – United Kingdom” language. (If this is not present click “Eloquence” click “Eloquence” in the “Synthesizer name” drop down first).
- Then click “Set as primary” button.
- Then click “Save as” and then accept the profile (or change if you wish).
- If you are asked to overwrite the profile choose “Yes”.
- If you are then prompted to set as default profile click “Yes” again.
- If you are asked to authenticate with the system please click “yes” or “Continue” button or supply administrator credentials apropriatre for the system.
