Mac OS - Taking a screenshot on a Mac

Problem

A customer needs to send a screenshot possibly in connection with troubleshooting an issue they have. 


Resolution

Taking a screenshot can be a helpful way of explaining an issue to Technical Support.  The procedure below allows you to take a screenshot of the entire screen area:

Method 1 - Using a mouse

  1. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
  2. Then click the Go menu and choose Applications.
  3. In Applications open the Utilities folder and then open Screenshot application.
  4. Depending on the type of screenshot you need click the icon for the following:

    Capture entire screen
    Capture selected window
    Capture selected portion

  5. When the mouse pointer turns into the camera icon click to take the screenshot selected.
  6. Click the x symbol on the left of the screenshot toolbar at the bottom to exit Screenshot app.

Method 2 - Using the keyboard

  1. Make sure you have the menu or window open with the problem you wish to screenshot.
  2. Use one of the hotkeys to take the screenshot as desired:

    Shift+command+3  - Capture entire screen
    Shift+command+4 - Capture highlighted screen selection
    Shift+command+4, then spacebar - capture window or menu nbar

  3. When the pointer changes to a camera icon click the window showing the details and this should usually be saved to desktop.

Note
If you wish to copy a smaller part of the screen press shift+command+4 then highlight the area and  press spacebar.
