JAWS - Thunderbird email client operation unfamiliar (adjustments for JAWS users)

Problem

A JAWS user who wishes to make use of the Mozilla Thunderbird email client may discover that the experience is the same as the Microsoft Outlook and similar applications.

Resolution

JAWS users may find making the adjustments below to Thunderbird settings makes using the app more familiar.  Please use one of the two sets of steps below depending on how you use the computer.

Method 1 - Using a mouse

  1. In Thunderbird open Tools > Preferences
  2. Then in the search box enter “Window” without the quotes.
  3. Then change the setting for “Open messages in” to the “A new window” setting.

Method 2 - Using the keyboard

  1. In Thunderbird press ALT+T and press up arrow to Preference then press ENTER.
  2. Press TAB to reach the search box, then search “Window” without the quotes.
  3. Then use arrow keys or TAB to get to “open Messages in” setting.
  4. When on the radio button use arrow to select “A new Window” option.
  5. Press CONTROL+W when finished adjusting settings.
