Microsoft - Non-Microsoft Store apps result in prompt to install anyway

Problem

When attempting to install third party software a pop-up message appears stating "The app you are trying to install is not a Microsoft-verified app".


Applies to

  1. Windows 10/11

Resolution

When the message "The app you are trying to install is not a Microsoft-verified app" appears you can select the button "Install anyway.  Alternatively you can use the steps below to prevent the message appearing in this circumstances.

  1. Click Start button or press Windows key to open the start menu.
  2. Then choose Settings app.
  3. Select Apps > Advanced App Settings.
  4. Navigate to and open the drop-down control Choose where to get apps, then select Anywhere. 
  5. Then close the Settings window.

Applications for other sources will then be allowed subject to UAC confirmation as normal.
