Microsoft - Non-Microsoft apps result in prompt to install anyway

Problem

When attempting to install third party software a pop-up message appears stating "The app you are trying to install is not a Microsoft-verified app".

Applies to

  1. Windows 10/11

Resolution

When the message "The app you are trying to install is not a Microsoft-verified app" appears you can select the button "Install anyway.  Alternatively you can use the steps below to prevent the message appearing in this circumstances.

  1. Open Start menu and choose Settings.
  2. Then select Apps > Advanced App Settings.
  3. Then click the drop down control to the right of Choose where to get apps, then select Anywhere
  4. Then close the Settings window.
The next time you try to install a non-Microsoft App you will  not be prompted as before.  However, if you system has User Account Control enabled you will be prompted to confirm you wish to continue.
