Microsoft - Non-Microsoft apps result in prompt to install anyway

Problem

Some Windows PCs are set to only accept Microsoft Store apps.  When installing any non-Microsoft Store app you are prompted about this and have to choose Install Anyway to continue.

  1. Windows 10/11

Resolution

If you no longer want to have Windows prompt like this every time you install a non-Microsoft Store app you can change the app recommendations settings so that applications from anywhere can be installed.

  1. Open Start menu and choose Settings.
  2. Then select Apps > Advanced App Settings.
  3. Then click the drop down control to the right of Choose where to get apps, then select Anywhere. 
  4. Then close the Settings window.
The next time you try to install a non-Microsoft App you will  not be prompted as before.  However, if you system has User Account Control enabled you will be prompted to confirm you wish to continue.
