Microsoft - Restart Windows to command prompt

Problem

An IT technician or Windows user would like to restart windows to a command prmpt.

Please choose the set of instructions that best fit your current scenario.


Method 1 - whilst logged into Windows

If you are currently logged into Windows, ie. you can see the taskbar use the steps below:
  1. Open Start menu and search Settings and launch from the results list.
  2. Choose Update and Security, then choose Recovery on the left hand side of the new window.
  3. On the right hand side under Advanced Startup click the Restart Now button.
  4. The PC/Laptop will then restart. Choose the Troublshoot and then Advanced Options.
  5. Then choose Command Prompt.
  6. Then pick an account name and then enter the account password.
  7. Enter any commands required.

Method 2 - From the logon screen

If you are on the sign in screen use the instructions below to restart to command prompt:
  1. Locate  the power button in the bottom right and click once to open the menu.
  2. Then hold SHIFT on the keyboard whilst clicking Restart option. Windows will then restart to recovery options. 
  3. Choose the Troublshoot and then Advanced Options.
  4. Then choose Command Prompt.
  5. Then pick an account name and then enter the account password.
  6. Enter any commands required.
