Microsoft - Restart Windows to command prompt

Problem

You wish to restart windows to a command prmpt.

Applies to

  1. Windows 11/10

Resolution

The instructions below will let users access the command prompt to issue diagnostic commands or in some cases allow testing of the keyboard in safe mode.


Method 1 - whilst logged into Windows

  1. Open Start menu and search Settings and launch from the results list.
  2. Choose Update and Security, then choose Recovery on the left hand side of the new window.
  3. On the right hand side under Advanced Startup click the Restart Now button.
  4. The PC/Laptop will then restart. Choose the Troublshoot and then Advanced Options.
  5. Then choose Command Prompt.
  6. Then pick an account name and then enter the account password.
  7. Enter any commands required.

Method 2 - From the logon screen

  1. Locate  the power button in the bottom right and click once to open the menu.
  2. Then hold SHIFT on the keyboard whilst clicking Restart option. Windows will then restart to recovery options. 
  3. Choose the Troublshoot and then Advanced Options.
  4. Then choose Command Prompt.
  5. Then pick an account name and then enter the account password.
  6. Enter any commands required.
