FS Install - ZoomText/Fusion ports and URL guide

Problem

IT staff at an organisation that operates a secure site may wish to know what communications are required by ZoomText.

Resolution

Below is a list of port and URLs ZoomTtext uses online for various scenarios. This can be used to modify firewalling and other security systems to accommodate ZoomText online communication in a corporate environment.

FSCast Notifications

New FSCast Notification - A Check for a new FSCast occurs on startup. The check for new FSCast is implemented by retrieving the RSS Feed at location:
https://www.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/rss.xml.
Using standard https protocol, JAWS contacts www.freedomscientific.com (http://www.freedomscientific.com/) at port 443.

  • FSCast check can be turned off by setting the "Notify about new FSCasts" in settings center.
  • The RSS Feed location is also specified in the default.jcf FSCast's section.
  • The RSS feed location can be changed in the FSCasts section.


Every JAWS comes with a set of links that can accessed via the Help Menu.
They are under Web Links. Here are the current set of links. They are specified in the default.jcf.


Check for new voices

A user can check for news voices from the help menu - More Voices... item.

Check for Updates

A user can initiate a check to see if new updates to the product are available. The updater first checks if an internet connection is available by trying to open the URL: http://www.freedomscientific.com
If it succeeds, it checks to see if FSUpdate.dll is present. If not, it tries to download the file first using FTP the link:

If the FTP download fails, it then uses the HTTP download using the link:

FSUpdate.dll references two URL's to get the list of updates. They are :

The updates reside in a Freedom Scientific database. If any updates are needed in the local system, the auto updater will download the updates from the list of updates. Updates are usually hosted in the Freedom Scientific CDN.


Authorization

Authorization - JAWS uses the Sentinel library to perform product authorization. If local authorization is not present network authorization is attempted. This document describes how the network authorization occcurs.


JAWS training

When the user selects a training material book in the Table of contents, it is again downloaded on to the computer. Remote Desktop Support

  1. JAWS Remote Desktop Support – If the user has configured JAWS Remote desktop support, JAWS piggybacks on an existing RDP connection by establishing Microsoft Virtual Channels to provide RDP support. Note that JAWS never initiates the RDP connection. The user uses MS user interfaces to establish the RDP connection.

Tip: If you want to use the Automatic Updates feature to update your software, your firewall must allow JAWS to access ports 20 and 21 or port 80.
