ZoomText - Remove AHOI support module to troubleshoot application behaviour

Problem

ZoomText appears to cause certain applications to exhibit unexpected behaviour when ZoomText is running that doesn't happen if ZoomText is not running.

Resolution

The problem behaviour or crash may be caused in a third party application by one of the ZoomText AHOI support modules.  One may temporarily remove a suspected AHOI module to test whether it is the problem module. In most cases the best ones to try first with an unknown third party app are AccEvent and UIA.  If the end result after testing indicates no effect then you can re-enable the modules.   If using an older version of Microsoft Office one may also disable the related module to see if that fixes a problem with that application.

Removing the AHOI module

Please use the steps below according to the version of ZoomText being worked on.

  1. Open the ZoomText interface window by either clicking the ZoomText taskbar button or pressing CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+U on the keyboard.
  2. Click the ZoomText menu or press ALT+Z and select help > Tools.
  3. Click in the Fix-IT edit box or use TAB to navigate then enter AHOI.
  4. Then activate Apply Fix-It Code button.
  5. Locate the desired module to remove and highlight it.  
  6. Then click “Remove” and exit the dialogue.
  7. Then restart ZoomText and check the problem application again

ZoomText 11.0 through 2023

  1. Open the ZoomText interface window and click the “ZoomText” menu.   Then choose “ZoomText support” and then “Fix it commands”.
  2. In the fix it commands window type “AHOI” without the quotes into he blank edit box and click “Apply fix it command”.
  3. Next a list of modules will e displayed.  Locate the desired module to remove and highlight it.  
  4. Then click “Remove” and exit the dialogue.
  5. Then restart ZoomText and check the problem application again.
  

Restoring disabled modules

Please use the steps below according to the version of ZoomText being worked on.

  1. Open the ZoomText interface window by either clicking the Zoomtext taskbar button or pressing CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+U on the keyboard.
  2. Click the ZoomText menu or press ALT+Z and select help > Tools.
  3. Click in the Fix-IT edit box or use TAB to navigate then enter AHOI.
  4. Then activate Apply Fix-It Code button.
  5. Then click “Add” and select the AHOI module file to add and click Open.
  6. Then restart ZoomText and check the problem application again.


ZoomText 11.0 through 2023

  1. Open the ZoomText interface window and click the “ZoomText” menu.   Then choose “ZoomText support” and then “Fix it commands”.
  2. In the fix it commands window type “AHOI” without the quotes into he blank edit box and click “Apply fix it command”.
  3. Click "Add module" and browse for the module name required.  
  4. Then click “Open” and confirm the module now appears in the list.
  5. Then restart ZoomText and the problem application.
