ZoomText– No magnification/screen corruption/black screen are displayed on launch
Problem
A ZoomText/Fusion user encounters a problem with any of the following, no magnification, screen corruption or a black screen ZoomText/Fusion is launched. .

Resolution
ZoomText/Fusion no screen magnification or black screen displayed when launched may respond to adjustments in the display adaptor settings app.
- Please update to the latest ZoomText/Fusion 2026.2603 or later if license permits, Users of earlier version may wish to check www.freedomscientific.com for updated builds of earlier major versions.
- If magnification appears but is not behaving properly try
setting resetting it to Let ZoomText decide first.
- If a you encounter a black screen when ZoomText/Fusion starts please try Maginification API or Magnification API (non magnified screen capture) instead.
- Where any of the above do not work it is possible there are two display adaptors on the machine, select Specific Adapter option and select one of the available adaptors.
From main window - using the mouse
- Click on the ZoomText/Fusion taskbar button to open the main window.
- Then click ZoomText/Fusion menu > Help > Advanced > Display Adaptor.
- In the new window make a note of the currently seelected setting to return to it if required.
- Then pick one of the othe options listed below that is different to the current setting:
Let ZoomText Decide (Default)
First available (video card name)
Magnification API
Magnification API (non magnified screen capture)
Specific adapter
- After picking an option click OK button.
- When prompted whether to restart ZoomText or Fusion click the Yes button to restart with the new setting.
- Test if the new setting has resolved the problem.
From main window - using the keyboard
- Press CONTROL+CAPSLOCK+U to open the ZoomText/Fusion main window.
- Then press ALT followed by F to open the Fusion menu.
- Press DOWN ARROW to Help then press ENTER.
- In the sub menu select Advanced and press ENTER.
- Then select Display Adaptor then press ENTER.
- In the new window make a note of the currently selected option.
- Then select one of the other options from the list below that is different from the current setting using the UP/DOWN ARROW keys.

Specific adapter
- Then press TAB to reach OK button then press SPACEBAR.
- When prompted to restart press TAB to select Yes then press SPACEBAR to have it restart with the new setting..
- Then test to see if the new setting has resolved the problem.
Note
- For ZoomText 2024 click ZoomText menu > Advanced > Display adaptor
- For ZoomText 2023 and below click ZoomText Menu > ZoomText Support > Display adaptor
Open the Display Settings app without ZoomText
if it is possible to log in as Administrator without the black screen effect you can launch the display adaptor utility directly using the steps below.
- Open Start menu by Clicking the Start button or pressing the WINDOWS key.
- At the search box enter Utilties, then select one of the items below as appropriate to the version of the product you are using:
Utilities - ZoomText 2026 > Change Display Adaptor Settings
Utilities - ZoomText 2025 > Change Display Adapter Settings
Utilities - ZoomText 2024 > Change Display Adapter Settings
Utilities - ZoomText 2023 > Change Display Adapter Settings
Utilities - ZoomText 2022 > Change Display Adapter Settings
- Then double click to open Change Display Adaptor Settings.
- Then click any of the options below:
Let ZoomText Decide (Default)
First available (video card name)
Magnification API
Magnification API (non magnified screen capture)
Specific adapter

- Then click OK to confirm the settins a\nd restart ZoomText/Fusion.
Note
- AdapterType=MagApiExcludeFromCapture is available from ZoomText/Fusion 2026 and later.
- AdapterType=MagAPI is availble in ZoomText/Fusion 2025 and lower, this setting does not exclude screen enhancements from being passed through.
Modify configuration file
If it is possible to log in as Administrator without ZoomText/Fusion is running you may be able to make the adjustment manually in an XML configuration file.
- Navgate to and open the config file located at the path below:
C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\ZoomText\2026\DwmDll.ini
- Then navigate to the [Config] section and made the modification below as approrpiate to the version of ZoomText being used (see note below):
AdapterType=MagApiExcludeFromCapture
or
AdapterType=MagAPI
- Then save and close the file.
Note
- AdapterType=MagApiExcludeFromCapture is only supported in ZoomText/Fusion 2026 and later.
- For ZoomText/Fusion 2025 and below use AdapterType=MagAPI instead.
