Freedom Scientific – Remote Access (JAWS/Fusion)

Freedom Scientific – Remote Access (JAWS/Fusion)

Problem

A Freedom Scientific JAWS/ZoomText Fusion user or IT technicians needs to become familiar with the workings and deployment of Remote Access facility for these products.

Applies to

  1. JAWS/ZoomText/Fusion (Remote)

Resolution

Remote Access is a feature offered only on JAWS and Fusion licenses that allows the user to connectg to another running copy of JAWS/Fusion on a server to gain access to resources and applications held on the remote computer. This is an add-on to the user's license which typically is hosted on the client workstation.  When connecting to the remote computer the remote copy of JAWS/Fusion picks up the remote license and allows the two copies of JAWS/Fusion to communicate and provide appropriate support to the user.

Supported licenses

  1. Remote Access require a JAWS or Fusion Professional license.

Alert
Attention!
Customers using ZoomText only can use Remote Access after upgrading their license to a Fusion license.  After this they can use ZoomText on client and remote computer to use the remote access feature.

Supported Remote protocols

The Remote Access feature supports the following protocols.

  1. Remote Desktop (RDP)
  2. Terminal Services
  3. CITRIX
Please also see:  Remote Access system requirements for further information.

Software installation

Remote Access is subject to the following installation requirements below:
  1. Client computer:  A copy of JAWS/Fusion software must be installed on the remote computer and also the client machine the user is operating and have remote access authorisation on their license.
  2. Remote computer:  A copy of the same JAWS/Fusion software must also be installed on the remote computer without authorisation (see software authorisation below).

Software downloads

  1. JAWS - offline installer
  2. Fusion - offline installers

Software Authorisation

  1. Client computer (Authorisation Required):  Remote Access may need to be added to an existing license If purchased separately, this can be achieved by conducting a manual activation of the software to add the license to the client computer.
  2. Remote authorisation (from client authorisation):  Authorisation is not required on the remote computer provided authorisation is available on the client machine which is contacted when the remote copy of first started.

Remote access in use

The correct operation of the Remote Access feature follows these broad lines:

  1. A copy of the Freedom Scientific BLV software must be running and apropriately authorised on the client system.
  2. The client end user then launches a connection to the remote computer and authenticates as necessary.
  3. Then a second copy of the software is run on the remote computer which reaches back to the client software to retrieve authorisation for remote access.
  4. When the authorisation process has completed the two copies then communicate over TCP/IP (or virtual channels) as appropriate to the connection protocol.    Information gather from the remote side is then sent back to the client installation where it is turned into magnification with enhancements or speech and Braille as appropriate to user requirements.
