Freedom Scientific – Remote Access (JAWS/Fusion)

Freedom Scientific – Remote Access (JAWS/Fusion)

About

Freedom Scientific offer the a Remote Access feature on their JAWS and Fusion license products.  This add-on license option provides the capability to access and control a another computer from their own workstation over common remote access protocols.  This capability is different from JAWS Tandem in that it provides ongoing access to a remote computer without the need for a rendezvous codes and an operator to be present at the remote end.  Organisations may require users to access certain valuable applications or services via Remote Desktop or CITRIX for security and ease of maintenance rather than have them present on every desktop PC they have,  The license once installed stays with the client installation of JAWS/Fusion software thus it is possible to install JAWS/Fusion on as many remote computers as required.

Supported licenses

  1. Remote Access require a JAWS or Fusion Professional license.

Attention!
Customers using ZoomText must upgrade to a Fusion license in order to use Remote Access.  After so doing ZoomText only can be run each end of the connection rather than JAWS/Fusion.

Supported Remote protocols

The Remote Access feature supports the following protocols.

  1. Remote Desktop (RDP)
  2. Terminal Services
  3. CITRIX
Please also see:  Remote Access system requirements for further information.

Software installation

Remote Access is subject to the following installation requirements below:
  1. Client computer:  A copy of JAWS/Fusion software must be installed on the remote computer and also the client machine the user is operating and have remote access authorisation on their license.
  2. Remote computer:  A copy of the same JAWS/Fusion software must also be installed on the remote computer without authorisation (see software authorisation below).

Software downloads

  1. JAWS - offline installer
  2. Fusion - offline installers

Note
Customers who do not use JAWS screen reader may use ZoomText solely without JAWS provided they have ZoomText installed on client and remote machines.  They must however, posses a Fusion license plus Remote Access add-on.  Please use ZoomText - offline installer instead.

Software Authorisation

  1. Client computer (Authorisation Required):  Remote Access may need to be added to an existing license If purchased separately, this can be achieved by conducting a manual activation of the software to add the license to the client computer.
  2. Remote authorisation (from client authorisation):  Authorisation is not required on the remote computer provided authorisation is available on the client machine which is contacted when the remote copy of first started.

Remote access in use

The correct operation of the Remote Access feature follows these broad lines:

  1. A copy of the Freedom Scientific BLV software must be running and apropriately authorised on the client system.
  2. The client end user then launches a connection to the remote computer and authenticates as necessary.
  3. Then a second copy of the software is run on the remote computer which reaches back to the client software to retrieve authorisation for remote access.
  4. When the authorisation process has completed the two copies then communicate over TCP/IP (or virtual channels) as appropriate to the connection protocol.    Information gather from the remote side is then sent back to the client installation where it is turned into magnification with enhancements or speech and Braille as appropriate to user requirements.
