Openbook - Select scanner source

Problem

An Openbook user is setting up Openbook with a flatbed scanner or multi-function printer with scanner unit.

Resolution

Use the steps below as appropriate to the desired method of interacting with Openbook kto make settings changes to use an attached flatbed scanner with Openbook.

Using the keyboard

  1. Launch Openbook software from the Desktop icon as normal.
  2. Press ALT+A to open the Advanced menu.
  3. Press DOWN ARROW to get to Device Selection and press ENTER.
  4. In the Device Selection dialogue press UP/DOWN ARROW keys to select Scanner in the Acquisition Source drop down and press TAB.
  5. Then press UP/DOWN ARROW to select the Device drop down.  The device name should contain the model of the scanner and/or the word TWAIN somewhere in the name.
  6. Then press TAB to OK and press ENTER.
  7. Then press SPACEBAR or F6 to test the scanner settings, if the flatbed scanner operates and text is returned from the scan the settings are good proceed to step 8 below.  If the scan was not successful repeat steps 2 through 6 and test a different scanner source.
  8. Press ALT+G for Settings menu and press ENTER on Save Settings menu item.
  9. In the new dialogue accept the filename and press TAB key to locate Save button and press SPACEBAR on it to overwrite them.
  10. When prompted to overwrite the settings file tab to Yes button and press ENTER. 

Using the mouse

  1. Launch Openbook software from the Desktop icon as normal.
  2. Then click Advanced > Device Selection.
  3. In the new dialogue click to select Scanner in the Acquisition Source drop down list.
  4. Then click the Device drop down list to select the scanner source for the flatbed scanner.  There may be more than one source, try to find one that matches the model of the scanner and contains TWAIN in the source name.
  5. Then click OK button.
  6. Before saving settings click Acquire > Acquire A Page to test the scanner.  If scanner operates and text is returned the settings are good proceed to next step below.  if there was a problem repeat steps 2 through 5 and select another possible scanner source then test again.
  7. To save settings click Settings > Save The Settings.
  8. In the new dialogue accept the name default and click Save button to update the default settings file which will be launched the next time Openbook is run.
