Zoomtext - HDR monitor setting causes black display

Zoomtext - HDR monitor setting causes black display

Problem

A customer using ZoomText 2023 or later with an HDR capable monitor gets a blank screen when ZoomText is enabled.

Applies to

  1. ZoomText/Fusion

Resolution

To resolve the problem on systems with a single display adaptor attached to HDR capable monitor the best strategy is to disable HDR functionality.

Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > display.
  2. Then click to turn off Use HDR

Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Display.
  2. Under Rearrange your displays select Windows HD Color settings.
  3. Then under Display capabilities set Use HDR to No setting.

Note
The developers have indicated that they are attempting to find a way to have the presence of HDR capable display detected automatically in a future release to prevent this problem arising..

Alternative solutions

If the system does not have an HDR display present the most likely cause is ZoomText being set to display its overlay on another display adapter to that being actively used.  Please see using display adaptor settings utility for ZoomText.
