JAWS - Disable automatic language detection

Problem

When reading text either in a web browser or Microsoft Office apps JAWS suddenly switches language for no apparent reason.


Resolution

JAWS automatically switches language when it detects embedded language codes in documents. You can opt to disable language switching in JAWS completely to work around the issue if you find it happens frequently.

  1. Press JAWSKey+number row 6 to open the Settings Centre.
  2. Then press CONTROL+SHIFT+D to open the default configuration.
  3. Then type “Language” in the search field without the quotes, then DOWN ARROW to Detect Language” option.
  4. Press SPACEBAR to toggle this option off.
  5. Then press TAB key to reach the Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it, then TAB to OK button and press ENTER.
