Disabling Hotkey mode on Lenovo laptops
Problem
A customer using a Lenovo laptop needs to have access to F1-F12 function key assignments rather than Lenovo hotkey features.
Resolution
By default Lenovo laptops have Hotkey Mode enabled which means the function keys when pressed alone will execute laptop hotkey features instead of traditional F1-F12 assignments. This may be a problem particularly for screen reader uses (such as JAWS) who need access to the F1-F12 function key assignments without needing to press Fn key as part of the key chord.
Method 1 - Disable function lock by hotkey
One option is to press Fn+ESCAPE hotkey which on some models disable Lenovo's Hotkey Mode feature. If that does not work one may have to enter the laptop BIOS to change the setting.
Method 2 - Disable Hotkey Mode in BIOS
Note
The BIOS screens are not accessible to Windows screen reader or magnification software products. Customers may require sighted support to change BIOS settings.
- With the laptop powered off press power button and immediately repeatedly keep pressing F1 key to enter BIOS directly. On some models the screen below may appear first, press F1 to enter the BIOS if it appears.
- When the BIOS screen shows choose Configuration and select Hotkey Mode.
- Then set Hotkey Mode to Disabled.
- Then press F10 and then ENTER to save the settings change.
