Focus V - Update firmware procedure (Focus 5th Generation)

Problem

A customer wishes to ensure their Focus Gen 5 Braille display firmware is up to date.

Resolution

Please review important information below before updating Focus firmware. 


Before updating

  • Review this procedure before attempting to update your unit
  • Make sure JAWS is installed on the computer you will be using for the update. It is not necessary to have JAWS running while updating the unit.
  • Make sure you have a USB cable
  • When the unit is powered on confirm the current firmware version installed: press Menu button (press twice if connected over USB with JAWS running) then the press left or right Rocker bar to verify the model and current firmware version. When finished, press the right Selector button to exit the menu.
  • Download the Focus Blue firmware file below and copy it to a location on your computer where you can easily find it later.

If you have a Focus display or an earlier generation please do not attempt to use Focus V firmware.

Firmware Improvements

  • Added support for the Kazakh language
  • Improved stability of ScratchPad for Hungarian, Kazakh, and Russian languages
  • Special characters are now displayed correctly in the Norwegian Help file
  • Updated the documentation on the SD Card


Update steps

  1. Using the link above, download and save the firmware file to a location on your computer where you can easily find it, for example, your Downloads folder.
  2. Plug the braille display into your computer's USB port and wait for the unit to power on.
  3. Note: If the Found New Hardware dialog box appears, follow the messages to locate the driver.
  4. Run the application file (EXE) for your unit and follow the messages to update the firmware.
    IMPORTANT: Do not disconnect the unit during the update process. When the update is finished, you may receive a message informing you to close and restart your screen reader before using your braille display.
  5. Verify the update was successful by pressing Menu button once (twice if the USB connection active) and then the top of the left or right Rocker bar to display the firmware version.
