About JAWS

Based off the original DOS product JAWS is a screen reader software offering by Freedom Scientific.  The letters made up of its name stand for (Job Access With Speech).  Offered originally by Henter-Joyce in 1994 it was significant for gaining widespread adoption by users in both USA and UK with its scripting capabilities creating flexible platform for making work positions accessible.  The product continues today to provide access to Microsoft Windows and third party applications.

Supported Platform

  • Windows 32 and 64bit
  • Windows ARM support (2023 and above)

Development cycle (major versions)

  • Annual major release scheduled approximately October/November each year.
  • Version upgrades chargeable.
  • Software Maintenance Agreement available for pre-paid cost effective access to 2 future major versions releases.

Minor version upgrades

During any major version cycle monthly upgrades are provided to authorised users for the life of the current version/ product cycle.


Technical Support

  • Phone and Email support provided to all users (current and earlier versions)
  • Support primarily provided through Sight & Sound Technology or UK queries.
