JAWS – Windows Start menu no longer speaks when navigating

JAWS – Windows Start menu no longer speaks when navigating

Problem

The Windows Start menu no longer speaks when opened. Using arrow keys or TAB elicits no speech feedback from JAWS.

Resolution

Freedom Scientific have developed a registry fix file that can be applied to affected systems. This resets the Windows UAC settings which can have a positive effect. An alternative manual method is provided below for IT technicians to apply manually instead.

Note

A copy of the reg file fix is also store under a JAWS folder in Teams Random Uploads if the link below does not work.

Method 1 – Use reg file to apply fix

  1. Please download the reg file fix from there link:

  2. Then navigate to the downloaded file and press F2 to rename.
  3. Change the extension from TXT to REG and press ENTER, respond by clicking yes on the notification prompt.
  4. When the file is renamed double click to install the fix, click Yes when prompted to add the fix.

Metho 2 – Apply fix to systems manually (IT technicians only)

  1. Open the regedit.exe application as administrator
  2. Then add the following information to apply the fix:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000005
"EnableLUA"=dword:00000001
"PromptOnSecureDesktop"=dword:00000001

  1. When done close the registry editor.
