JAWS – Windows Start menu no longer speaks when navigating

Problem

The Windows Start menu no longer speaks when opened. Using arrow keys or TAB elicits no speech feedback from JAWS.


Applies to 

  1. JAWS with Windows 10/11

Resolution

  1. This problem has been identified in Windows 10 and Windows with JAWS version 2025 included.
  2. Freedom Scientific have developed a registry fix file that can be applied to affected systems. This resets the Windows UAC settings which can have a positive effect. An alternative manual method is provided below for IT technicians to apply manually instead.
  1. Open the regedit.exe application as administrator
  2. Then add the following information to apply the fix:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin"=dword:00000005
"EnableLUA"=dword:00000001
"PromptOnSecureDesktop"=dword:00000001

    1. When done close the registry editor.
