Microsoft – Unable to search 'This PC' in Windows 11 Start menu

Problem

Users of Windows 10 may be accustomed to searching This PC to open Windows Explorer but this no longer works in Windows 11.

Resolution

These solutions are particularly useful for those that navigate Windows using the keyboard.  Please see the solutions below. 

Method 1 – Search File Explorer instead

  1. Open Start menu.
  2. Then search File Explorer.
  3. The File Explorer window should open as normal.

Method 2 – Restore This PC to desktop icon

  1. Press WINDOWS+D and press T to locate This PC icon.  If this is found jump to step 8 below.  Otherwis proceed to step 2 below.
  2. Open Start menu. Then search Themes And Related Settings and press ENTER. 
  3. Then press TAB to reach Related Settings and press ENTER, a new dialogue window will open.
  4. Then press JAWSKey+TAB to check Computer is checked, if it is unched press SPACEBAR so the item is checked.
  5. Then press TAB to Apply button and press SPACEBAR.
  6. Then press ENTER to close the window.
  7. Then press WINDOWS+D and press T to locate the item “This PC” on the Desktop.
  8. Then press SHIFT+F10, then press ARROW keys to locate the option Pin To Start and press ENTER.
  9. From here pop up Start menu and search This PC, it should then come up as a result because it is now pinned to Start menu.
