Mac OS – Save FileVault recovery key
Problem
Your Mac has updated to Mac OS Tahoe which has enabled FileVault, you wish to be able to locate the recovery key.
Applies to
- Mac OS Tahoe (2026)
Resolution
From Mac OS Tahoe and later Apple automatically enables FileVault a security feature to encrypts the content of the user's storage to protect the data from misuse or extraction. For further information please refer to the following Apple articles below:
- How does FileVault work on a Mac?
- Protect data on your Mac with FileVault
In the event you ever forget your Mac password with FileVault enabled, you may need to provide the FileVault recovery key to regain access. Apple technical support cannot provide this information to users,. If the user has other Apple devices signed into the same Apple account and they have iCloud keychain enabled they can view it on their device. If however they do not have another Apple device they must manually save their recovery key in a safe place in case of emergency. Apple technical support cannot provide the recovery key to customers.
- Click Apple menu (top left of screen)
- Then click open System Settings.
- In the left panel click to open Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down, then click FileVault in the right hand list.
- Then click Show button below the FileVault toggle button which should be on.
- When the key is displayed copy down the complete key and store it a safe place until you need it.
