Microsoft - Clear print queue to restore printing

Problem

A customer is unable to print after a paper jam or another problem that stops printing. 


Detail

If there is an event that stops printing the print queue may still retain the unfinished print job which may itself prevent further printing. 


Resolution

The steps below that any corrective action to resolve the issue that halted printing has taken place and you need to clear the print queue to resume printing again.  Use each method to attempt to clear the print queue. 

Method 1 - Using the Windows UI


Using the mouse

  1. Open Start menu and search "Printers & scanners" and click to open this result.
  2. Click your printer in the list on the next screen, and then click "open queue" button.
  3. In the new window you may see one or more print jobs listed which have not been completed.
  4. Click the "Printer" menu and then choose "Cancel all documents" then click "Yes" button when asked to confirm this action.
  5. When the jobs have been successfully removed check the printer is on and loaded with paper and ready to print.
  6. Then try printing a test document to confirm this has helped.

If the problem persists progress to the method below to fix the problem.


Using the keyboard

  1. Press Windows key to open Start menu and search "Printers & scanners" and click to open this result.
  2. Press TAB to reach the instance of your printer in the list and press SPACEBAR on it.
  3. Then press TAB to reach Open Queue button.
  4. Then press ALT+P and down arrow to Cancel All Documents, then press ENTER.
  5. Any documents in the print queue will be removed.

Method 2 - Manually remove bad/stuck print jobs


Using the mouse

  1. Right click Star menu, then click Run in the menu.
  2. Then enter the command below and click OK button:

    services.msc

  3. In the Services window right click the item Print Spooler right click then choose Stop to halt the service.
  4. Then open My Computer and click the address bar.
  5. Then type or copy the line below into the address bar:
    "C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS"
  6. Then delete any files shown, these represent the bad or stuck print jobs in the system.
  7. Then switch back to the Services window the right click Print Spooler again and choose Start in the context menu to restart the service, then retry printing again.
