Google – Chrome tab groups

Problem

You wish to know how to use Chrome tab groups to manage certain  tasks in a more organised way.

Applies to

  1. Google Chrome browser

Resolution

If a Google Chrome user has a lot of tabs they use it may be preferrable to have them grouped to make the number more manageable.  Using tab groups it is possible to group related tabs and save that grouping for later if desired.

Creating a tab group

  1. Open Chrome as normal.
  2. Right click one tab you wish to associate with a tab group.
  3. In the menu select Add To Tab Group.  
  4. In the pop-up window enter a name for the tab group.
  5. (Optional) Click the coloured circle to assign the tab group a colour.
  6. To add another open tab to the tab group right click the tab, then choose; Add To Tab Group then click the tab group name you just created to add it to that group.
After creating a tab group it should appear on the left side of the bookmarks bar when it is visible.


Using tab groups

Refer to the below image which is an example of what you will see and see below some possible actions you can take.
  1. Click on the coloured tab group to expland or contract the group.
  2. Righ click the tab group to take action on the tab group such as closing the group or change group colour.
  3. Tabs within a group will show a coloured line to denote they below to the tab group.  Tabs that do not have a coloured line are not associated with a group. 
  4. Click and drag towards the tab group to make it a member of a tab group.
  5. On the bookmarks bar click the tab group name to reopen the tab group if it is closed.
 

Tab group startup behaviour

Depending on how you work you may wish to adjust the setting to tell Chrome to reopen the tab grops when it first starts or not.  If disabled you must click the tab group in the bookmarks bar to open them manually.

  1. Click Menu > Settings > On Startup.
  2. Then click the desired radio button option for On Startup from the choices below:

    Open the New Tab page
    Ctontinue where you left off
    Open a specific page or set of pages

  3. Then close the tab.
