Installing JAWS for the first time or a new upgrade

Installing JAWS for the first time or a new upgrade

Problem

You have a JAWS product and are installing for the first time.

Installation Media

  • JAWS normally comes as a downloadble product in a confirmation email including a download link with serial number and ILM code number for installation.
  • If you need to reinstall JAWS but do not have recourse to the original confirmation email you can download from www.freedomscientific.com
  • Physically installation media can be requested at the time of purchase for £25.
  • If you have purchased a dongle version product your dongle will be shipped to you but do not attempt to use the dongle until you have installed the software.
  • Please note that the dongle has no installable software on it and you should continue to download/install the software as normal.

Installing JAWS

  • If you are installing within a business, government or educational environment you may need administrator credentials to conduct the install.
  • After downloading run the JAWS installer or insert the JAWS CD installation media. Complete the install and restart the machine as requested.
  • If using the CD installation media you may need to manually locate the installer on the CD to start the installation.
  • After restart JAWS will request activation, at this point you can supply the 20 digit authorisation number to activate either online or manually if in a secure environment.
  • If you have a dongle you can insert that to install the dongle drivers.
  • If using the dongle but JAWS does not appear to authorie from it click Utilities menu and choose Re-initialise Authorisation. The correct serial number should then appear in the status line of the JAWS window or About JAWS dialogue.

Configuration

  • JAWS may post dialogue boxes to confirm options and allow additional configuration of JAWS. Be sure to respond to those options such as automatically start JAWS to ensure the end user has access to the software when they restart the PC in future.

Installing JAWS network authorisation

  • You will need to install the Sentinel license server on a machine on your network all client PCs can see. Please refer to Sentinel Software Download links and info for more information.
  • Once the Sentinel server is running and activated you can install JAWS on client PCs.
  • If JAWS client installations post for activation or do not pick up the network license you may need to set up an LSFORCEHOST environment variable on the client PCs so they lick up the license.
