JAWS – Installation file paths

JAWS – Installation file paths

Problem

You wish to know what file paths the JAWS installation creates in Windows.

Applies to

  1. JAWS

Resolution

In order to assist with troubleshooting JAWS, this guide provides information on important file paths in JAWS including paths to important utilities and documentation.

JAWS installation folders

“C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\JAWS”
“C:\Program Files (x86)\Freedom Scientific\JAWS”

Authorisation (ILM only)

In the case of IILM authorisation the authorisation key is stored on disk as a jaws.cps file which is normally hidden and can be found in this location:

%ProgramData%\Freedom Scientific\License
“C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Activator”
Notes
Note
  1. From JAWS 2020 onwards the path to License folder is used, for JAWS versions prior to 2020 use the path to Activator folder instead.
  2. Files in these folders are hidden/system/protected operating system files.  You may need to change folder options display to view them.

Authorisation utilities

There are two major authorisation utilities for checking authorisation of JAWS on system:
These include ILM authorisation viewer (hjauth.exe) and Dongle viewer “DongleViewer.exe”. If you need to run the activation process but are unable to start JAWS you can run “fsClientActivator.exe” application from this path also:

“C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Authorization Tools\6.0”

Notes
Note
You may need to allow for changes to folders that clearly display a version or year for the most up to date versions of JAWS.

Braille Display Settings

JAWS supports a number of Braille displays to be attached to the software, the configuration should normally be done through the JAWS window UI but the configuration file is located here:
[path]

Shared settings

This path contains the default settings for JAWS that are used when no user configuration takes place. Normally you should not need to amend these but in certain cases you may wish to:

“C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Settings\enu”

User Configuration files

JAWS user configuration files are stored under the user’s profile normally so the path may vary by who is logged in, the location is:

“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Settings\enu”

Where [username] is the profile folder associated with the logged in user. File stored in this location include JCF and any custom JSS files.

Error reports

The JAWS error reports are stored under the user profile and can be automatically sent by JAWS back to the developers:

“C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\Reports”

Where [username] is the profile folder associated with the logged in user. File stored in this location

Manuals and reference

JAWS comes with manuals and reference information besides in the file path below:

“C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Locale\enu\Manuals”

Speech drivers

JAWS supports a number of hardware and soft synths, drivers can be found in this path:
“C:\Program Files\Freedom Scientific\Shared\Speech\3.9”

User Voice Profiles

If the user creates any new user voice profiles this is the path into which they will go:

“C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Settings\VoiceProfiles”

Utilities

JAWS is supplied with a number of utilities to facilitate its operation including those for authorisation purposes:

“C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Utilities”

JAWS Scripts files

C:\ProgramData\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\2019\Scripts

Details of settings files and settings flags

This section covers known information about specific settings files and internal flags set for JAWS.

Default.JCF flags

This file stores the default settings for JAWS which include any user voice settings and some startup flags detailed below.

MigrationWizardDisplayed

If this flag is set to 1 this means that the migration wizard will not be displayed, set this to 0 in order to re-trigger notification for migrating settings.

ActiveSoundCard

This entry stores the setting for desired soundcard for JAWS to speak through, the device however must be available in order for this to work. If not JAWS will most likely run through the default sound device set in Windows.

DisplayStartupWizard
This flag determines whether the startup wizard is displayed, the default is 0 which means it is not displayed, set to 1 in order to have this pop up when JAWS starts. You can reach the “startup wizard” regardless of the flag by going JAWS window > Help > startup wizard
