JAWS – Loss of keyboard functionality with JAWS and HumanWare Braille displays

Problem

A JAWS user who has a HumanWare Braille displays encounters a where keyboard input functionality is lost.

Resolution

JAWS users who are affected by this problem may access an optional update to resolve the problem:

  1. JAWS 2025.2503.39 - online installer
  2. JAWS 2025.2503.39 - offline installer

If the problem continues use the following steps to resolve the problem:

  1. From the JAWS window, press ALT+U to open the Utilities menu and press B to open the Synthesizer and Braille Manager.
  2. Press ALT+A to select Add, remove, or change devices.
  3. When prompted to choose a device type, select Braille displays and press ENTER.
  4. From the list of available Braille displays, press DOWN ARROW until you reach HID Braille Display and press SPACEBAR to uncheck it.
  5. Press ENTER. Continue pressing ENTER for any remaining prompts until you return to the main Synthesizer and Braille Manager screen. At this point, select the Close button to exit.
  6. Remove the USB connection from your Braille display, restart JAWS, then reconnect the display.
