JAWS – Using the Braille viewer

JAWS – Using the Braille viewer

Problem

A trainer assisting a JAWS user with attached Braille display may wish to see a print version what is displayed on the Braille display.

Applies to

  1. JAWS

Resolution

Included with JAWS is a Braille Viewer utility, the function of Braille Viewer is to mirror in print what is shown on an attached Braille display.  This therefore may be useful for JAWS trainers or technicians for troubleshooting a problem.  Braille Viewer does not require a Braille display to be connected to operate and therefore can used to help create JAWS training materials for Braille users.

Launch Braille Viewer

  1. Press JAWSKey+J if using desktop or CONTROL+JAWSKey+J for laptop keyboard layout.
  2. When JAWS UI appears press ALT+U within the JAWS window for Utilities menu or press down arrow and press ENTER on Utilities in the JAWS context menu
  3. Within the Utilities menu use ARROW keys to locate Braille and Text viewer and press ENTER.
  4. Then use ARROW keys to select Show Braille Viewer and press ENTER, the Braille Viewer is started and will mirror the contents of the attached Braille display in print.

Disable Braille Viewer

  1. Using the keyboard navigate into the JAWS window/context menu, then select Utilities > Braille and text viewer.
  2. Then navigate to Brailler Viewer (checked) and press ENTER to disable the option.
