Make JAWS speak the control state first

Problem

A JAWS/Fusion user may wish to have JAWS speak the state of the control before announcing the item name. This is a characteristic of WindowEyes screen reader and some may prefer this presentation.

Application

When using a form repeatedly you may wish to work more quickly through a form of checkboxes using this setting.

Resolution

  1. Open settings Centre by pressing JAWSKey+6 on the number with the application you are using in focus.
  2. Then type the word “item” without the quotes into the search box.
  3. Then press down arrow to the option “Say item state first”.
  4. Then press SPACEBAR to toggle this option on.
  5. Then press TAB to reach the Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it.
  6. Then press ENTER to dismiss the Settings Centre window.
