Microsoft – Prevent Windows prompting to set up OneDrive backup

Problem

A user running Windows 11 receives a message prompting them to set up OneDrive backup on their PC or laptop after updates are installed.

Detail

Typically  after a Windows update are installed Microsoft may prompt the user to backup their PC using OneDrive.  If the already has a backup plan or uses another backup method they can disable this prompt.


Resolution

This prompt can be disabled in the Windows 11 settings app using the steps below.

If you disable OneDrive backup without any alternative backup method in place this may potentially risks loss of data in the event of hardware failure.  Disable this at your risk.


  1. From the Start menu open Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
  2. Then click to uncheck the option "Suggest ways I can finish
  3. setting up my device to get the most out of Windows. "
  4. The changes will then be complete, close Settings window.
