Microsoft – Scanning to PDF file using built in apps

If a scanner or all in one printer/scanner unit does not offer a dedicated scan to PDF function it is possible to use either Windows built in or Microsoft Store app to accomplish the task.
Method 1 - Using Windows Scan
The Windows Scan is a Microsoft Store app so the firs thing you may need to do is download and install it.
Installing Windows Scan
- Open Start menu and type Store then click Microsoft Store in search results.
- Then type Scan into the search box and click "Windows Scan" result.
- On the next page click the Get button this should then download the app.
- When the button changes to Open click this to open Windows Scan app.
Scanning to PDF file
- When the Scan app loads you may need to select your scanner source on the left side of the screen.
- Then check that the format drop down is set to PDF.
- Then click Scan button to scan your documents.
- The resulting document will then be automatically saved in your Pictures folder accessible via This PC. The full location is:
C:\Users\YourUserName\Pictures\Scans
Method 2 - Using Windows Fax and Scan app
- Open Windows Fax and Scan program.
- Click the New Scan button in the toolbar.
- Check in the new window the correct scanner and click Change button and select the correct scanner.
- Then click Profile dropdown and choose "Document".
- Then click "Scan" button, the scanner will then operate and the document appears.
- Then click File > Print and in the new window click the Printer drop down and select Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Then click the "Print" button bottom right.
- Then the Save dialogue will open, choose a location to save the PDF file to for convenient retrieval.
