Using Network Configuration status printout to assess Wi-Fi connection problems

Problem

If a Canon Pixma range printer is having Wi-Fi connection problems you can get the printer to produce a report of the current network configuration. Whether it is connected and what the signal strength is.

Steps

  1. Turn on the printer if not already powered on.
  2. Load a sheet of paper into the paper tray for the printer to produce its Network Configuration page.
  3. Press and hold the Wi-fi button until the green power lamp starts flashing.
  4. The press and immediately release the Wi-fi button again.
  5. The printer should then respond by printing out the Network Configuration page.
  6. When the page is produced there are two lines of information of particular interest:
  • Connection
  • Signal Strength
  1. Examin the report for the Connection status (on/off) and the value for Signal Strength.
If the customer is having Wi-Fi connection difficulties the signal strength would be a key indicator. Where the connection is marginal the printer may even disconnect at times and not be available.

Resolution

  • If the signal strength is very week 30 percent or below try moving the printer nearer the router or access point to improve reception.
  • Power cycle the router or access point to improve reception.
  • If Connection shows as off check the network SSID and network key are correct. If using any Wi-Fi boosters check SSID and key to see if they are different and enter ammended information.
  • If Connection shows as off check that the Wi-Fi is turned off, if USB or Ethernet is plugged in remove the cable as many printers only accept one form of connection disabling others.
  • If the Connection shows off and the customer is in Student halls or other locations where there is a public shared Wi-Fi this connection type will not work as the printer is unable to log onto the network properly. In this situation using USB or wired network connection where available is the best solution.
