ZoomText – CodeMeter license server running with critical security vulnerability

Problem

An IT technician within an organisation encounters an instance of CodeMeter running within their network whcih they learn is now the subject of a critical security notice.  

Applies to

  1. ZoomText 9.1-11.0

Resolution

  1. The ZoomText 9.1 though 11.0 used the WIBU CodeMeter network license tools for the network license.  Subsequent versions 2018 and later switched to using Sentinel license manager instead.
  2. Any organisation who encounters a CodeMeter server instance running on their network should assess whether this is running a ZoomText license or a license for a third party product that is currently in active use.  
  3. Those still actively using an old ZoomText 9.1-11.0 with a CodeMeter license are advised to upgrade their ZoomText software as many developments have taken place with later ZoomText releases.
  4. Having confirmed that a later licernse for ZoomText is deployed on the network the CodeMeter instance can then be decomissioned.  Sight & Sound are happy to advise customers with a network license on this if they need an upgraded license.
