eMotion – Set up with JAWS

Problem

A HIMS eMotion user needs to set up their QBraille XL to work with JAWS screen reader.

Resolution

Before any communication can take place (USB or Bluetooth) a drivere must be installed to allow the eMotion to be detected by he Windows operating system,  Then to use JAWS some setup is required to configure JAWS to access the HIMS eMotion via whichevef connection (Bluetooth or USB) is used.

HIMS driver installation

  1. Press enter on the link:  Download HIMS driver installer to download the installer package.
  2. After download navigate to the location of the driver, then press SHIFT+F10 and select Extract All and press ENTER.  Follow the on screen instructions to complete the extraction  A new explorer window will show with the installer ready to launch..
  3. Press ENTER on the HIMS USB driver application to run the installer.
  4. When the setup launches press Enter on Install button and Next buttons when they appear to complete set up..
  5. When drivers have been successfully installed activate the Finish button.
  6. Power on the eMotion then physically connect the eMotion using a USB cable to install Windows drivers.
  7. The eMotion should then display “Terminal Mode”  on the display after drivers are successfully installed.

  1. Power on the eMotion display and enter Terminal for screen reader mode.
  2. 2)Navigate to the JAWS Window and press ALT and then press ENTER on Options.
  3. Then press DOWN ARROW to Braille then press ENTER.
  4. Then choose HIMS Braille EDGE as your Braille device. 
  5. Tab to “Advanced” and press “Enter”. 
  6. Choose USB as the port if connecting via USB, or the correct 
  7. Com Port if using Bluetooth. 
  8. Tab to “OK” and press “Enter”. 
  9. When prompted restart JAWS for the settings to 
  10. take effect. 
  11. After restart Braille should begin displaying. 

Connect via Bluetooth

With the eMotion powered on enter the Connectivity menu and choose Bluetooth Braille Connection, the Braille display will show ‘Paring  Braille Edge’.

  1. Open Start menu and search, then launch Control Panel.
  2. Then jopen Devices and Printers 
  3. TAB to Add a Device then press ENTER.
  4. Windows will then searches for devices and displays them in a list. 
  5. Use the UP/DOWN Arrow keys to navigate to Braille eMotion and press ENTER.
  6. When prompted to provide a passcode 0000, then press ENTER.  This should result in the message being displayed:  "Found new hardware".
  7. A final dialog will then indicating successful device setup.

Note
It is very important to note the Bluetooth COM port when setting up the Braille 
connection, as you will need this when setting up your screen reader.
