Focus V – Unable to establish Bluetooth connection or ‘unsupported device’ error (IOS)

Problem

A Focus 5th generation user is attempting to pair with an IOS device but during pairing either a message ‘Unsupported device’ or pairing fails for another reason.

Resolution

This document is intended to address particular Focus connection problems with IOS devices but the concepts may be applied successfully Android devices also.
  1. Consider if it is possible that the Focus may already have been paired with the device. Since the Focus V has 4 slots for establishing Bluetooth connections, an existing connection pairing may already be available.  Check pairing slots.
  2. If there has previously been an unsuccessful pairing between a Focus and IOS device the IOS device may have stored and held onto incomplete pairing information that prevents it from establishing a clean pairing.

Method 1 - Reviewing/clearing Focus connection slots

  1. With the Focus braille display not connected via Bluetooth or USB, press the Menu button.
  2. Press up on a Rocker Bar until you reach Connections.
  3. Press the right Shift key.
    1. Press up or down on a Rocker Bar to move through the list of Bluetooth pairings.  If there are more than 4 pairings, you will need to delete one to permit establishment of a new pairing.
    2. If all five pairings are used, the iPhone will act as if the Focus Blue is an unsupported device.
  4. To delete all Bluetooth pairings, navigate to the Delete All item and press dot 8.
  5. Press y (Dots 1-3-4-5-6 to confirm “Delete all?”
  6. If you wish, instead, to delete a single Bluetooth connection

Method 2 - Restart Bluetooth radio

  1. If there has been a failure to pair with an IOS device it may help to restart the Bluetooth radio and pair again.
  2. Open Settings > Bluetooth, turn off Bluetooth wait 5 seconds, then turn on Bluetooth again and attempt pairing or alternatively power off the IOS device by opening Settings > General > Power off device, or use the recommended button pushes to shut down and restart.

Method 3 – Reset Network Settings

Occasionally resetting Network Settings is required to clear faulty connection data.  You may lose any Wi-Fi connections, Bluetooth connections if you do this.
