JAWS – Accessing volume settings

Problem

A JAWS user wishes to access volume settings for their computer when they need to.

Resolution

Please choose either method below for adjusting system volume.

Method 1 - Using the system tray

  1. Press JAWSKey+F11.
  2. Then use UP/DOWN ARROW keys to find the entry for speakers or headphones and press ALT+L.
  3. In the volume slider window press LEFT ARROW to reduce volume or press RIGHT ARROW to increase volume. 
  4. When done press ESCAPE or press ALT+TAB to access another window.

Method 2 – Using volume mixer

  1. Press Windows key to open Start menu.
  2. Then search SNDVOL.EXE and press ENTER to open the result.
  3. Press TAB or SHIFT+TAB to navigate through the various sliders starting from the main volume on the left.
  4. Press UP ARROW to increase volume or DOWN ARROW to decrease volume.
  5. When done press ALT+F4 to close the volume panel.


Note
  1. You can use PAGEUP or PAGEDOWN to move in courser increments, be careful not to turn the speech two low doing this.
  2. Some laptops may allow you to press Fn+Function key to adjust volume or mute sound, refer to laptop documentation for this information.

Create volume panel desktop shortcut

  1. Press Windows key to open Start menu.
  2. Then type to search SNDVOL.EXE and then press SHIFT+F10 to open the context menu.
  3. Then press ARROW KEYS to select Open File Location and press ENTER.  An Explorer window will then open.
  4. Press SHIFT+F1 and press ARROE KEYS or letter N shortcut to reach Send To and press ENTER or RIGHT ARROW.
  5. Then press DOWN ARROW to select Send To Desktop (create shortcut).
