JAWS – Add new voices

Problem

A JAWS user would like to add additional Vocalizer voices to theit JAWS installation.

Resolution

Additional voices Vocalizer Expressive voices are available for JAWS screen reader via JAWS window > Options > Voices > Add/Remove Voices dialogue.

Note
  1. An Internet connection is reuired to add additional Vocalizer voices.
  2. To install new voices one must have an Administrator level log in, assistance of local IT staff in an organisation may be required to install new voices.


Step 1 - Adding a new voice

  1. Press JAWSKey+J to open JAWS window.
  2. Press ALT+O to open Options menu.
  3. Then use UP/DOWN keys to navigate to Voices then press ENTER.
  4. Then use UP/DOWN keys to locate Add/Remove Voices dialogue and press ENTER.
  5. In the new window use ALT+DOWN arrow to open the Select A Language drop down list, then pres UP/DOWN ARROW keys to select the desired language eg. English, then press TAB to Premium Voices list.
  6. Use UP/DOWN arrow keys to browse the available voices, you can press ALT+P to play a sample of the currently selected voice.
  7. To select the voice for install press SPACEBAR on it, then press ALT+I to install.  A new window will then be posted and installation progress will be reported. 
  8. Press ENTER on the Finish button when installation  has completed.

Note
Whilst in the voice select list you can highlight more than one voice for installation by navigating to a different voice name and press SPACEBAR on it.



Step 2 - Selecting a new voice

  1. Open JAWS window > Options > Voices > Voice Adjustment.
  2. Then press ALT+DOWN ARROW to o pen the profile drop down, then use arrow keys to select new Vocalizer voice that was installed earlier then press ENTER.
  3. Then press TAB to Reach the Save As button and press SPACEBAR.
  4. Then you will be prompted to provide a name or just press ENTER to accept the one already given.
  5. Then press TAB to reach Apply button and press SPACEBAR on it.
  6. Then you may be prompted whether to save it as default, press TAB to reach Yes then press SPACEBAR to have JAWS save it as the default voice.

Note
When applying the settings for a profile you may be prompted to overwrite it if it already exists, press TAB to reach Yes then press SPACEBAR to save the modification.
