JAWS – Check version and serial number authorisation status from 'About...' screen

JAWS – Check version and serial number authorisation status from 'About...' screen

Problem

A JAWS user would like to verify their version and authorisation status.

Resolution

  1. The following methods work for both ILM or Dongle Authorisation.  If authorisation is not present or insufficient for the version running, the serial number 801 is displayed to indicate the product is running in 40 minute demo mode.
  2. Use the steps as appropriate to the keyboard that JAWS been set to, use number pad INSERT for desktop mode or CAPSLOCK for laptop mode for the JAWSKey.

Method 1 – Using desktop hotkeys

  1. Press JAWSKey+J to open JAWS interface.
  2. When using JAWS in a window press ALT+H and then down arrow to About JAWS and press ENTER.
  3. When using JAWS context menu press JAWSKey+J then down arrow to About JAWS and press ENTER.
  4. Information regarding version and serial number, any SMA counts and options will then be read out automatically.
  5. If you miss any information press JAWSKey+B or use speech history hotkey JWSKey+SPACE followed by letter H, then use cursor keys to review and/or copy the information to a document.

Method 2 – Using laptop keystrokes

  1. Press CONTROL+JAWSKey+J to open the JAWS interface.
  2. When using JAWS in a window press ALT+H and then down arrow to About JAWS and press ENTER.
  3. When using JAWS context menu press JAWSKey+J then down arrow to About JAWS and press ENTER.
  4. If you miss any information press JAWSKey+B or use speech history hotkey JAWSKey+SPACE followed by letter H, then use cursor keys to review and/or copy the information to a document.

Notes
Note
If when checking the about screen the product serial number is shown as 801 this indicates the product is not authorised yet and is running in demo mode, time left on the demo is also indicated.

Idea
TIP
JAWS may be operated in two different UI modes.  By default JAWS is set to run as a program window and appears in the ALT+TAB order of running apps.  JAWS can optionally be set to run from system tray where it appears as a context menu and does not appear in the ALT+TAB order of running apps.
