JAWS – Disable automatic reading of opened email

Problem

A JAWS user wishes to prevent JAWS automatically reading the contents of an opened in the Microsoft Outlook application.

Resolution

The automatic reading behaviour is a features that can be disabled using the steps below.

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook classic.
  2. Press JAWSKey+V to open the Quick Settings windfow.
  3. Then enter the word Auto then press down arrow to reach Messages Automatically Read.
  4. Then press spacebar to disable the checkbox.
  5. Then press TAB to reach Apply then press SPACEBAR, then press ENTER to dismiss the Quick Settings window.  Messages opened in Outlook will no longer automatically read.
