FS Auth - 40 minute timer expired

FS Auth - 40 minute timer expired

Problem

A Freedom Scientific product JAWS/ZoomText/Fusion upon launch immediately posts a message asking the user to restart the machine because the 40 minute demo timer has expired.  After restarting the same message pops up without the product every running.

Resolution

Unless a Freedom Scientific product receives valid ILM or Dongle authorisation the product will continue to run in 40 minute demo mode.  On some Windows 10/11 systems the demo timer may not get reset due to Windows performing a hybrid boot which does not allow the timer to be reset.  As a consequence the user may be continually prompted to restart without the product running at all.

Choose the resolution appropriate to need and authorisation method being used.

Method 1 - Disable fast startup

Using a mouse

  1. Open Start menu and search “Control panel”.
  2. In “Control Panel” open “Power options” or if you do not see this straight away click “View by” drop down and switch from “Category” to either “Small icons” or “Large icons” instead, you should then see “Power Options”.
  3. In “Power options” click “Choose What the power button does”.
  4. Then click “Change settings that are not currently unavailable”.
  5. Then uncheck the option “Turn on fast startup” and click “Save changes” button.
  6. Then restart your PC.

Using the keyboard

  1. Press Windows key and search Control Panel and press ENTER on the result open it.
  2. Then in Control Panel press F6 to get to the View by drop down and set it to Small Icons or Large Icons.
  3. Then press letter P until you reach Power and press SPACEBAR to open it.
  4. Press F6 to move the links on side panel and down arrow to "Choose what the power button does" and press spacebarb.
  5. Then TAB to "Change settings that are not currently visble" and press ENTER on this.
  6. Then press TAB to reach "Fast Startup" checkbox, press SPACEBAR to uncheck the option.
  7. TAB to "Save Changes" button and press SPACEBAR on it.

The above should mean JAWS will start fully and prompt for activation.

Method 2 - Fix for dongle license customers

  1. Whilst the product displays the prompt to restore insert the USB dongle.
  2. Allow 5-15 seconds for any dongle drivers to be installed and initiated.
  3. Then click the OK button on the prompt message to allow the computer to restart.
  4. Upon restart the product should detect the dongle authorisation and continue to worl.

Method 3 - Fix for network license

Please make sure that the network license is being detected and if necessary deploy the LSFORFCEHOST system environment variable so that JAWS knows the server to pick up the license from.
