Microsoft - Retore/hide desktop system icons

Problem

You wish to restore or hide certain system desktop icons on the Windows Desktop being displayed.

Applies to

  1. Windows 11

Resolution

Use the one of the methods below according to your prefferred method of operation.

Using a mouse

  1. Right click Start button, then choose System in the menu.
  2. At the search box type Theme click the result in the drop down menu for Themes And Related Settings.
  3. Click Desktop Icons.
  4. In the new window click to check/uncheck the following desktop icons to allow them to be displayed or hidden on the Windows desktop.

    Computer
    User Files
    Network
    Recycle Bin
    Control Panel

  5. Then click OK to complete changes.

Usihng the keyboard

  1. Press WINDOWSKey+I to open Settings to the Home page.
  2. In the search box enter Theme and press down arrow to reach Themes And Related Settings then press ENTER.  
  3. Press TAB to reach the button Desktop Icons button then press SPACEBAR.
  4. Then use the hotkeys from the list below to check or uncheck an option, alternartively use the UP/DOIWN ARROW keys to move between the available options.

    Press ALT+M to add Computer to Windows Desktop.
    Press ALT+U to add User Files to Windows Desktop.
    Press ALT+N to add Network to to Windows Desktop.
    Press ALT+R to add Recycle Bin to Windows Desktop.
    Press ALT=O to add Control Panel to Windows Desktop.

  5. Then press TAB to reach OK button and press SPACEBAR to complete your changes.
