JAWS - Microsoft Word attachments will not read when opened from Outlook

Problem

When opening a Microsoft Word file attachment in an Outlook email the attachment opens but JAWS does not read it.


Resolution

Multiple causes may result in the problem described please try each solution below to see if they may resolve the issue.


Method 1-  allow document editing if protected view is enabled

  1. Open the attachment as normal.
  2. Then press F6, a message may then be spoken telling you the document is in protected mode.
  3. Press right arrow to navigate to “Allow Editing” button, then press spacebar.

The document should then be readable, however you will need to perform the above actions to access the document each time it is opened. This setting known as "protected view" can be disabled but does have an associated security risk being disabled.


Method 2 - Switch to print view manually

  1. Open the attachment as normal.
  2. Then press ALT followed by W and then P.
  3. The document should then read properly.
  4. Save the document locally to retain this setting when the document is next opened.


Method 3 - disable activation of reading view for attachments

  1. Open File > options > General.
  2. Scroll or tab down to checkbox “open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view”.
  3. Uncheck this option and click “OK”.
