JAWS - Transfer personal settings to another installation

Problem

A customer who has JAWS installed on one computer would like to transfer their personal settings to another installation of JAWS.


Resolution

JAWS has a settings export/import tool available for this task.

Step 1 - Export JAWS settings

On the computer you wish to export JAWS settings insert a USB memory drive or SD card media to export your JAWS settings to. It will be necessary for you to know the name and drive letter for this media to save to.

  1. Open the JAWS window using JAWSKey+J.
  2. Then navigate to the Utilities menu then select Import/Export settings.
  3. Then select Export All Settings and then pressing ENTER.
  4. Then accept or change the path to export settings, if you accept the default location they will be exported to the Windows desktop.
  5. Then press TAB or ALT+B to select the browse button to save the settings to a USB drive.
  6. Use the cursor keys to select the location on the USB or SD card you inserted in step one.
  7. Then press TAB to reach the Finish button to complete export of your settings to the external drive.


Step 2 - Import JAWS settings 

On the computer you wish to import JAWS settings insert a USB memory drive or SD card media with your saved JAWS settings It will be necessary for you to know the name and drive letter for this media to save to.

  1. Open the JAWS window using JAWSKey+J.
  2. Then navigate to the Utilities menu then select Import/Export settings.
  3. Then select Import… menu item.
  4. Then press TAB to reach the Browse button and press SPACEBAR or press the shortcut ALT+B.
  5. In the explorer window navigate to the location the user settings has been saved to, then once on the file press ENTER to select the backup file.
  6. Then press TAB to reach the Next button and press SPACEBAR on it or ALT+N shortcut. You can then review the settings being imported using cursor keys.
  7. Press tab to reach the Next button or press ALT+N shortcut to proceed.
  8. You may then be prompted whether to merge or delete the existing settings before import, select the radio button option “Yes, delete all my settings and import” option and press ENTER.
  9. You may then need to activate the Finish and OK buttons at the end to complete the process.
