JAWS – Using the Startup Wizard results in UAC prompt with limited user accounts

JAWS – Using the Startup Wizard results in UAC prompt with limited user accounts

Problem

When a user is logged onto a computer using a limited user account and is responding to prompt from the Startup Wizard to customise their settings may be presented UAC dialogue they cannot provide administrator credentials for.

Applies to

  1. JAWS

Resolution

  1. Most changes in the Startup Wizard do not require elevation as they only affect JAWS ocnfiguration settings that do not otherways affect the Windows system.  However, in order for auto-startup settings to work certain chnges to the Windows registgry are required that will cause a UAC dialogue to appear to request user elevation which a limited user account may not have.
  2. It is recommended in such situations that the user does not attempt to set up auto-startup themselves and skip onto the next screens of the Startup Wizard to make changes to other settings.  In order to make the startup changes it will be necessary to have access to admin credentials to elevate the user as necessary for auto-startup.
  3. Alternatiively, for larger software deployments it may be advisable to supply the necessary changes as part of the softwaree deployment stage instead using Windows registry changes for a more streamlined setup process.  Please JAWS auto-startup registry settings for details.
