Microsoft - Harvard Reference style missing in Word

Problem

In Microsoft Word you encounter a problem when clicking Styles drop down with the Reference toolbar, Harvard Anglia reference style is not available.

  1. Microsoft Word

Resolution

Before proceeding with the solution outlined below make sure are using Microsoft Word installed in WQindows or Mac OS.  Word online does not have the Harvard referencing facilities.

Method 1 - Check language settings

Check that UK English is set within Microsoft Word, when it is selected Harvard style should then be available automatically.

  1. Click File → Options → Language
  2. Check under the Office Authoring Languages & Proofing for the presence of English (United Kingdom) is availeble, 
  3. Then click to Set As Default button.
  4. If English (United Kingdom) is not preesent click the Add Language button, select it and click Set As Defalt.
  5. Restart Microwoft Word..

Method 4 - Add reference style manually

  1. Close Microsoft Word.
  2. With a browser go:  https://github.com/codingo/BibWord
  3. Locate the green drop down then choose Download Zip link.
  4. Open the ZIP file and navigate to Bibword - Master > Styles.
  5. Then select and copy the file: HarvardAnglia.xsl
  6. Right click Start button and choose Run command, then click OK.
  7. Paste in the path after the colon and click OK: %appdata%\Microsoft\Bibliography\Style
  8. In the new Window paste the HarvardAnglia.xsl into this folder,
  9. Reopen Microsoft Word and see if it is possible to find Harvard Anglia in the liust of available reference styles.

Method 5 - Use external reference managers

The following third party reference managers are also availabe:

  1. Zotero (free)
  2. Mendeley
  3. EndNote
